Ambrose started his law education while in the football team of his team, the Cleveland Browns, graduating magna cum laude in 1987 at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. After graduation from Cleveland-Marshall Ambrose joined McHugh Hopkins, a law firm. McDonald Hopkins. He has also been involved with the companies which include Chriszt McGarry Co. and Nicola Gudbranson and Cooper. He was the judge in charge for the case of Anthony Sowell, the Cleveland serial killer, who was found guilty of eighty-two charges. On the 12th of August, 2011, Ambrose sentenced Sowell to death.

After leaving playing in the NFL, Ambrose became an attorney. He has also been a judge in the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas since 2004.

A student at Iona Prep, Ambrose played college football at the University of Virginia and earned All-ACC (first-team) distinctions in his senior and junior seasons. He earned an undergraduate degree in education from Virginia. In the year 1975, in the NFL draft, he was selected to Cleveland Browns.
