He began his career as a jazz musician, playing the saxophone and clarinet in various bands. He eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he began appearing in films and television shows. Crothers' first major role was in the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, in which he played the role of Turkle.
